Alexa Rank More Important Than PageRank
PageRank is fast becoming meaningless as a way to judge the value of a page. It doesn't take into account the amount of traffic the page gets, which I think is a big signal for a search engine. Traffic measuring sites like Alexa are a good way to judge a website. The higher the traffic, the more influential it is. It's a basic signal, but one you can't get away from. If the home page of a site is PR1 but has a decent Alexa score, as opposed to a PR4 home page with low Alexa score, I'd judge the former as being far more valuable than the latter.

Why do this anyway?
Your search engine ranking is heavily determined by which websites link to your website. One way to get websites to link to you is by offering a link back to them - this can be a mutually beneficial exchange, particularly if the two wesbites are closely related.
You have full control of who joins the directory - you can edit or delete any entry.
You can also add entries yourself via the backoffice - you can even send an automated email to website owners requesting a link exchange after you add them to the directory.
With the resource directory, you can have potentially dozens (if not hundreds) of websites linking to your website without any effort on your part.
