How to get a higher click through rate for Google Adsense

If you are running Google Adsense on your website, and aren't getting a high click through rate (CTR), it's probably because the ads are on a page that doesn't have a strong theme - which can lead to inappropriate ads/public service ads shown on your page. So, make sure your pages are strongly themed! This should be important anyway for your on-page search engine optimization. By 'strongly themed', make sure:-

- your page TITLE has a clear, keyword rich description of the page (e.g. "Skiing | Ski Boots | Rossignol Nordic For Men and Women")
- you should have the H1 title displaying the same as the page TITLE (to keep it consistant)
- images should feature the same keywords (e.g. Rossignol Nordic Ski Boots for an image displaying the actual titled boots!)
- the content body of the page should clearly describe not just the subject (e.g. Rossignol Nordic Ski Boots) but mention the context of the subject too - skiing - winter sports etc. It underlines the theme of the page.
- the page has internal links to it on your website using good anchor text - e.g. "Rossignol Nordic Ski Boots" and not just a product code number or 'click here' :)

Another tip which really only works in conjunction with the one just mentioned - use the Google Adsense Preview Tool to identify the URL landing pages of your advertisers. You can then use the Competitive Ad Filter and block ads you feel are not converting, even if they're relevant to the page (some ads are 'sticky' and appear on your pages often over days, so you can see if they work or not over time).
