company.com/facebook is better than facebook.com/company

In the years to come, your brand will be on a much stronger platform if you can control the platform it's on. There's nothing wrong with social media, but it should augment your marketing endeavours, not be the centre of it.

To put it bluntly, your main focus should be on your company/business website, not Facebook or Twitter or LinkedIn. The shifting sands of social media mean that any of these platforms can become the MySpace of next year.
